Kuriya Japanese Market is known to be a one-stop shop for Japanese food items including fresh sashimi, sushi, sake, frozen food items, sauces, seasonings, and condiments.
Looking for one near you? The market has outlets at Waterway Point, Great World (within &JOY Dining Hall), Jurong Point, Nex (within Shokutsu Ten Japanese Food Street), Causeway Point, JEM, Tampines 1, Tiong Bahru Plaza, Northpoint City and AMK Hub.
It is also the exclusive retailer for Gyomu Super, a popular 800+ supermarket chain of outlets in Japan.
With a wide range of dry items, frozen foods, and plenty of snack items with everyday low prices, you can be quite spoilt for choice.
What’s noteworthy to mention is that you can get the freshest sashimi as premium fish and seafood are air-flown to Singapore from Japan such as the Osaka Central Wholesale Market thrice a week.
Yet compared to other dine-in restos, sashimi prices are at least 30% cheaper.
You can add a Japanese flair to your Chinese New Year with their newly launched festive products.
Available from now till 26 Feb 2021, a 2 days advance order online is required for CNY specials, and 1 day for sashimi & sushi platters.
This includes their first-ever Japanese Treasure Pot aka Pen Cai ($188, for 4-5 pax) which features premium ingredients including whole abalone, sashimi-grade scallops from Hokkaido, snow crab leg meat, prawn, and more in superior stock boiled for hours. The Pen Cai is available exclusively via Kuriya Japanese Market’s festive e-store.
(Customers can also opt to takeaway the Sushi & Sashimi Platters and CNY YuSheng from each outlet, though there will be a waiting time of 30 minutes or so.)
Abundance YuSheng ($60.80 nett, for 6-8 pax)
In line with the auspicious phrase ”Nian Nian You Yu” 年年有余, this Abundance YuSheng featuring slices of not one, not two, but three types of fish – fresh Norwegian Salmon, Maguro (tuna) and Hamachi (yellowtail) from Japan.
You don’t often find sashimi slices of Japanese Hamachi in YuSheng. The fish is known to be luscious and buttery in texture which melts in the mouth, possessing that desirable bold and rich flavour.
It is also interesting to find the inclusion of Chuka Kurage (seasoned jellyfish) and Chuka Wakame (seasoned seaweed) as base ingredients for the prosperity toss, which adds that slightly chewy texture contrasted with the vegetables.
If you would like to try something different from the usual sweet plum sauce for your YuSheng, then you will enjoy the house-special yuzu dressing made using ingredients from Japan.
I enjoyed it for its zest and refreshing tanginess, which lifted the taste of the cut vegetables.
Also available is a Blessings YuSheng ($48.80 nett, for 6-8 pax) which has 2 kinds of sashimi – Norwegian Salmon and Hamachi.
Invigorating Fruits YuSheng ($56.80, available online only)
For a healthier lohei experience, this vibrantly colourful YuSheng includes a refreshing medley of six types of fruits: pomelo, pear, guava, mango, pineapple and jackfruit.
My favourite was the mango which added a creamy, sweet-fruity taste; while the strong-flavoured jackfruit will have an element of surprise.
If the sashimi lover in you would like more ”yu” in your YuSheng, choose the following top-ups with fishes freshly imported from Japan:
– 8pc Maguro (Tuna) $6.80
– 8pc Salmon $6.80
– 8pc Madako (Octopus) $7.80

– 8pc Mekajiki (Swordfish) $7.80
– 8pc Hotate (Scallop) $11.80
